Greater Spotted Woodpecker

The greater spotted woodpecker is a striking bird. They are frequent visitors to my garden, taking peanuts from feeders and working their way up the bark of trees looking for insects. During the spring and summer the noise of their hammering on tree trunks reverberates through the air. They hammer to excavate nest holes and also to attract mates.
